With Spring came open windows and open windows meant the screens needed fixing. Tom, was so proud of his screen replacement, but Katie-Kitty was determined to get out and did -- she pushed out his not even 24-hour old screen and escaped! She was on the back porch steps the next morning, and slept all day!
A couple of days later, she did it again, but this time she didn't go out alone! She had company. Sometime during the night, Katie had pushed out the screen on another window. She and Sy came back in, but L.C. was nowhere to be found. The next morning, much to my relief, L.C. was home no worse for the adventure. Like Katie, L.C. slept all day.
The story doesn't end here.
One night,Cooper dashed out the door but didn't come back the next day like Katie and L.C. did. Though he did come back Saturday, he wouldn't come in. He first came to the back door, but ran back into the bushes when he saw a human. Next, he appeared on the front porch, but still wouldn't come in. A neighbor had seen him too. He was still alive and knew where home was. Sunday he was still missing.
Monday night, we were sitting on the sofa when Tom said, "Look who's out there"! Cooper was looking in the back door. Determined to catch him, I grabbed the first thing I could find -- one of Tom's shirts. I tiptoed out the front door and around the side of the house to the back. Cooper saw me, though, and scooted back into the shadows and out of sight again! I was so disheartened -- would he ever come back? Still, he was alive and knew where home was.
Tuesday, not long after sunset, the sky still streaked with melon and
persimmon, we heard "meoow, meow, meooooowwww" outside on the front porch.
Cooper was home and wanted us to know it. I opened the door and backed
away. A grey blur shot to the food dish. Hunger finally won, and Cooper
was inside. I wish he could tell his tale; I'll bet he has a good one!
Cooper snuggled up next to Tom and made friends. I think he learned from his adventure who loves him and how good he really has it.
