Although this scenic and relatively unspoiled river flows through their midst, it is largely unknown to most of the million or so residents of Fayette and Shelby Counties...

It is one of Memphis' best kept secrets.

From its origin near Springhill, Mississippi, the Wolf River flows approximately 86 miles through vast expanses of cypress wetlands and undisturbed forest in its upper reaches in rural Mississippi and Tennessee, and through urban Memphis and Shelby County, before emptying into the Mississippi River.

Memphis has a very unique urban asset in the Wolf River. Many cities only decide to develop a river greenbelt plan after they have already lost the one they had. We have a wide greenbelt through our city that runs upriver until it meets a vast bottomland hardwood forest just outside of Memphis. Because of this, we have a truly "green" greenway.
Too many cities just have a river with a sidewalk and some decorative trees along the bank. We have a wildlife and recreation corridor starting in downtown Memphis and going nearly 90 miles to the headwaters of the Wolf.
Larry J. Smith
Director, Wolf River Conservancy

"The Ghost River section of the Wolf is one of the most beautiful, varied and challenging wetland canoe trails in the country. The river feels so wild and exotic you'll think you are on a tributary of the Amazon..."
Keith Kirkland
